Do it yourself

If you want to try out the game yourself, you can download this brochure and use it as a guideline. To play it the way we did, you need 40 players to represent the six generations in the evolutionary chain. Two more players represent the passing time, and of course there needs to be a game master. To mark extinction or evolutionary success, you can use hats of different colours – we used blue and orange hats. Every participant needs a die to determine an action, a copy of the brochure, and a pen.

These guidelines contain all the varying rules of the experiments you can see on this website. On each page, there are blank spaces to be filled in by the players. That way, every participant can write down which word or sentence they received, if they had to mutate it, if they succeeded in passing it on, and if not, for what reason. This also provides a documentation of the results that you can use for further discussions or visualizations of the experiments.
